15mm Frostgrave Warbands

I'm almost ready for a game of Frostgrave now that I have 2 warbands painted! One is made up of Copplestone castings Barbarians and Nothmen, the other is Orcs and goblins from the Blood Dawn range. All figures pictured were based and undercoated in one session, then completed over a long afternoon/evening (half of the barbarians were already painted and only required base decoration and some touch-ups).

Practice with the Reeves coarse acrylic medium used as snow effect has yeilded improved results. Sometimes applying a little more once the first go has dried is a safe way to thicken up the snow without getting it all blobby.

Apprentice, Wizard, thug, Templar

Infantryman, Thief, Infantryman, Treasure Hunter
Starting warband 500gc
Apprentice, Wizard, Archers

Thief, Barbarian/Templar
Goblin Thugs
Starting warband 500gc

The Orc Wizard still needs some facepaint and maybe some decorative detail on his clothes. I'm working on some skeletons (Blood Dawn) which are a lot of fun to paint... I think I'll order some of the Blighthaven ones to supplement them.

It's interesting to note that I always get on with a project much faster if it has a theme, rather then the more common "I could use this for a number of things" plan.
Additionally, figures and terrain built for a specific theme tend to look significantly better than ones that could be used for a variety of themes. When you aim for "generic, you rarely get exciting results.

  1. Very nice! Loads of character for small figures.

    1. Thanks! I feel these are about the two best ranges of fantasy 15mm. Copplestone in particular is a genius.

  2. Lovely work Spacejacker- so much detail in such little figures! Are you going to Colours? I'd love to get some tips!

  4. I don't do fantasy stuff very often, and posts like this definitely make me think I should. The acrylic medium as snow trick is a good one... there are so many lousy ways to do snow but it looks very convincing. And using a "real art product" means it shouldn't discolour over time... I hope :)

    1. It's a nice change of pace, although I find fantasy models have a lot more tiny detail than sci-fi. And I'm not a fan of tiny detail in 15mm. Still good fun.

  5. These are smashing and I love the terrain, nicely put together and all well painted. I'm just about to start on my Frostgrave warbands, you've inspired me :-)

    1. Glad to hear it! If I enjoy the game I'm going to do a bunch of creatures and scenario-specific terrain, like the mausoleum and the tower from the book.

  6. The skin tones on the barbarians and the orcs put my work to shame! I have the Copplestone barbarians. How to the Blood dawn orcs compare size-wise?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cheers! The Blood Dawn orcs are massive, basically 20mm scale. I don't mind big orcs though. The skin tone recipe is fairly simple, AP barbarian flesh base, reikland fleshshade wash, highlight with barbarian flesh. That's it!

  7. Great stuff Jacker! I went all in on Frostgrave, as did a friend. We are going to do it as our winter project. But man your 15mm stuff looks terrific and I have more Demonworld stuff than I know what to do with and the Copplestone too.

    1. Wether or not I stick with Frostgrave, simply making some terrain to suit it's theme really spurred me on to get through my fantasy minis backlog. After all this painting, I'm really crossing my fingers that the game is actually fun!

  8. It's hard to notice these are actually 15mm. Your painting gives them so much more details.
Lovely work as always. I'm very glad this project got you into blogging again.

  10. This is such a wonderful bunch of minis, you paint like a pro! Also, nice terrain. Can I ask what do you use for bases?

    1. Thanks Karlos! The answer to your (number 1 most-asked on this blog) question is: 20mm round plastic slotta bases, from em-4 miniatures in the UK. ;)

  11. I still have trouble believing that these are 15mm. Feel like some commissions?

    1. I must regretfully decline commissions, I simply don't have the time. Cheers though!

  12. I can't add anything other than 'oohs' and 'ahhhs' to the discussion.

That and to lament that we don't live near each other.

And we never finished our comic book talk.

And we're overdue for Destiny co-op action.

    And...get to the chopper.

And... I think you have Dave watching *Aliens* all the time confused with yourself watching Predator all the time. Although something tells me you watch Aliens a lot too, (cough) fireteam lv426.

  13. Funny... I was just thinking along the lines of Spacejacker's modular terrain (the one you use for 5 Parsecs) meets Frostgrave!

Ruined walls instead of bulkheads with door and windows frame instead of small doors and large breaches instead of garage door, flagstone patern on the floor and snow on top of everything...

    1. Nice idea! That could work really nicely for a ruined city in ways that loose terrain wouldn't.

    3. I'm in the same boat.

I found this blog when I was looking for quality 15mm painting methods that don't require 8+ layered highlights... and this is it!

Your figures are lovely and I'm looking forward to leveraging your techniques onto my own Peter Pig English Civil War figures.

I noticed that you haven't updated your blog recently. I hope to see you posting new material soon.

      Best regards, Jeff

The process can be speed up by using a PC and a USB cable but in most cases it is inconvenient since the process is boring and you have to first copy the file on the PC.
