Monkey Boys

Highlander studios does some great 15mm minis. Some of which are for 5150... And some of those are these "Zhu Zhu's" or monkey-boys. These minis make a terrific little skirmish squad and have really grown on me.

"Laugh while you can, monkey boy!"

I finished these recently, after having them half-painted for a long time... A bad habit of mine. These minis are deceptively complex sculpts, so once I got past the base color stage, I put them aside until I had time to highlight all the various folds and bits.

The uniforms are Vallejo Khaki, with Citadel Charadon Granite gear. The guns are simple boltgun metal with an earthshade wash.

Thanks for looking!

  1. When Rod and I chat he often mentions his skills as a photographer...or lack there of, and I agree with him...happily. Seeing this unit now with your painting and the nice pictures make me appreciate my friends sculpt work more.

You really make these tiny models look great! I would like to see your art on my art in 2013!

  2. These guys are great! Wasn't even thinking 'Muggy' Zhu-Zhus when I first saw them. There's just not enough Planet of the Apes gaming out there, this is a huge step in that direction.

    1. Cheers Mik! Eureka's boiler suit apes are pretty awesome for 28mm. I often think I should pick some up...

  4. These are great! I'm reminded of the old insult from the Berserker novels for we pesky "bad Life" humans "monkey boys", this gives it a whole new meaning...)

  6. These are new to me, SJ- Must take a look at Highlander Studios. They look like quite involved sculpts and of course you have done your usual top job of throwing paint at 'em.....good man!

  8. Nice job on those. I just don't know what to use them for.

I like the new colors on the blog as well. When we did colored pencil renderings in college, we did them on a grey that was just a little lighter than that. They absolutely glowed. You pics are looking great with that background.

    1. Thanks LA.. I was doing some tidying up and couldn't help but tinker with the colors.

My idea of a "force" is 5 models.. That way it's always easy to justify a pack!

    2. Well I can justify Sharks with guns and Orcas in power armor, but Monkeys dressed like Castro?

Although if someone did Pigs in jack boots...

  10. Liking this group a lot, painting top notch as usual; and thanks for the heads up on a new range to explore.

I certainly see an opportunity to head swap the less ape posed figures for new characters/rebels.
